Airbus A320 final assembly line in Tianjin goes into operation

TIANJIN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- An A320 final assembly line of the world aircraft giant Airbus, the first of its kind built outside Europe, was officially inaugurated on Sunday in the north China metropolis of Tianjin.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Airbus Chief Executive Officer Thomas Enders attended the inauguration ceremony.

The line, a joint venture between Airbus and Tianjin Zhongtian Aviation Industry Investment Co., was built in just 15 months. The first A320 plane it assembles is expected to come off line by summer 2009.

"With the final assembly line here in Tianjin, we deepen and expand our industrial relationship, which is a key pillar of the internationalization strategy of Airbus," Enders said while addressing the ceremony.

The Tianjin assembly line, the third on top of two in Toulouse and Hamburg, is to deliver two types of aircraft of the A320 family -- A319 and A320. The A320 family, which includes the A318,A319, A320 and A321, is recognized as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family.

The Tianjin line will be able to assemble 44 aircraft a year by2011, plant sources said. The aircraft will be assembled and delivered in China to the same standards as those assembled and delivered in Europe.

"It is an assembly line with the latest state-of-the-art technologies, as it has integrated technologies from both lines in France and Germany," Enders said.

China is the second largest aviation market, and it would be as important as the United States and Europe over the next 20 or 30 years, he said.

According to an estimate by the company last February, the mainland area of China would need more than 3,000 aircraft between2006 and 2025, including 180 super jumbo passenger planes.

In addition to the Tianjin assembly line, Airbus purchased 70 million U.S. dollars worth of high quality components and materials from Chinese companies in 2007 alone.

"This week, we set a new goal of one billion U.S. dollars of annual sourcing from Chinese companies in 2020," Enders announced.

The company earlier said it aimed to triple the annual China sourcing by 2010 to more than 200 million U.S. dollars.

Boeing in the United States and Airbus currently dominate the world's large airplane market, and only manufacturers in the U.S., Europe and Russia own the technologies to build such planes.

China, however, is actively developing such technologies. The country set up its first ever jumbo passenger aircraft company in Shanghai in May, taking a major step forward in its large jet program.

Enders said in Tianjin on Friday that his company hoped to join in China's large plane project, on the sidelines of the two-day 2008 Summer Davos forum.

Analysts believe that China would play a bigger role in the world's aviation industry with the Tianjin line in operation, as final assembly lines stand for a core competitiveness of aviation manufacturers.

"China is an important -- and increasingly important -- part ofthe global aviation family," Enders told Xinhua on Sunday.

China's economy in good shape despite global financial chaos

China's economy was in good shape and capable of maintaining financial stability despite global chaos, Liu Mingkang, chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC), said on Saturday.

Liu made the remarks at the ongoing 2008 Summer Davos forum, also known as the Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2008, which kicked off on Saturday in the north China metropolis of Tianjin.

Though feeling gloomy about the outlook of the world economy, most attendees were confident about China's economic prospects.

"China has full confidence and capabilities to ensure sound and fast economic growth for a long period of time," Premier Wen Jiabao said at the opening ceremony.

Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, said China is still a fast growing economy and maylead the world economy in the future.

But for now, as the financial market globalizes, no country could escape the financial crisis, Liu said.

He forecast the annual economic growth would slow to between 9 percent or 9.5 percent, as falling consumer spending in Europe and the United States cut export demands. China's economy expanded 11.9 percent last year.

"This is not a bad thing for China," Liu said, "China needs not only speed, but also quality."

"We had more room to boost growth as consumption and investment demands could make up for the falling exports," Liu said.

Speaking about the U.S. government's 700 billion dollar bailout package, Liu said, it would boost market confidence, but not enough for a cure.

He compared the proposed rescue plan to convenient "fast food", and said "slow and fine-cooked food" was what the world needs.

According to William R. Rhodes, Senior Vice-Chairman of Citigroup, the People's Bank of China, the country's central bank, was working closely with the U.S. Federal Reserve on a series of measures to contain the impact of financial crisis. CBRC was also in close consultation with the Fed.

China's Suitcase and Bag Export Industry Conducting Quality and Safety Training Workshop

China's suitcase and bag export industry watchdog Friday kicked off the country's first-ever quality and safety training session in eastern Pinghu city, to boost quality awareness among the industry's manufacturers.

Nearly 100 large domestic suitcase and bag manufacturers and exporters took part in training for the newly-compiled "Guide to Quality and Safety Control for Export-oriented Bags and Suitcases".

The guide was jointly compiled by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, China Chamber of Commerce for Imports and Exports and an expert panel, said Huang Daqi, China Chamber of Commerce for Imports and Exports of Suitcases and Bags secretary general.

The guide detailed the differences between the domestic and foreign markets' quality and safety standards, the main technical regulations of targeted markets and how to deal with technical export barriers and so on.

Huang added that although there were not serious export suitcase and bag quality problems up to date, the country's first quality pre-emptive "dictionary" and training were also crucial, as "fire prevention" was even more important than "fire fighting".

As the world's largest suitcase and bag manufacturer, China exported 6.286 billion U.S. dollars of product globally in the first half of this year, up 26.45 percent year on year.

Figures revealed that the country's exported suitcases and bags accounted for more than one third of the global market. The United States and the European Union were the major customers.

Liang Ming, a member of the expert panel, urged domestic companies to regularly check technical, health and environmental protection standards in the main targeted markets, and enhance th equality and brand awareness, as "brand strategy is an important channel for industrial upgrading".

Shi Lili, a Ministry of Commerce research fellow, said pressure on exporters from the appreciation of the yuan, labor and material price increases and the slowing pace of U.S. and European markets were signs that domestic companies should embark on a "quality and brand-oriented" development road, as only those companies that did so would survive further squeezes on their profits.

Located in eastern Zhejiang Province, Pinghu city sees this sector turning out more than 5 billion yuan sales volume last year, according to Shi Jihong, local industry chamber president.

But most of these companies were doing the labor-intensive Original Equipment Manufacturing business, while their own brands were mostly low-end ones, Shi added. Log on http://www.midwestUSAChina.com for more information.
